There are two versions available of the William Morris Woodpecker Tapestry. This is not the original since it is without the verse at the top and bottom, with the result that we enjoy a less slim tapestry still showing the design of the woodpecker chasing another bird in a fruit tree – the original version of The Woodpecker is available with the text at top and bottom.
The Woodpecker tapestry wallhanging was designed and woven solely by William Morris. He installed a high warp tapestry loom in his bedroom in 1885 and incorporated his own verse into the design. This told the legend of Picus, an ancient Italian king who was turned into a woodpecker by the sorceress Circe because she was jealous of the king’s love for his wife.
It is now woven in France in 80% cotton and 20% viscose and is lined, with a rod pocket for easy hanging. The Woodpecker is one of our two most popular William Morris tapestries (the other being the Tree of Life tapestry).
This version of the Woodpecker tapestry is available in one size.
