Quest for the Holy Grail – small
The Quest for the Holy Grail – small tapestry is adapted from the Verdure with Deer and Shields tapestry in the Quest for the Holy Grail tapestries designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, with work by William Morris. It was to hang underneath The Summons tapestry at Stanmore Hall. The original was adapted by John Henry Dearle in 1900 and woven in wool and silk on a cotton warp by Morris & Co at Merton Abbey based on the 15th century tale Le Morte D’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory. They were also called the San Graal tapestries and are now at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
This tapestry is woven in France by Jules Pansu in 95% cotton and is lined, with a rod pocket for easy hanging. It shows the unicorn, representing purity, and the Lion, representing courage, underneath the shields of the 24 Knights of the Round Table in a modern adaptation of this Arturian theme. It is a much smaller version of the full Quest for the Holy Grail tapestry which has the verse from Verdure with Deer and Shields additionally. The Lion and the Unicorn are also available separately.
